Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the state is set to enact a groundbreaking law restricting the purchase of land in specific regions. The law will ensure that only Assamese individuals can acquire land in Majuli, Batadrava, and Barpeta, among others, with a focus on developing a feeling of collective identity.
Addressing the gathering at the Swahid Divas, Sarma underscored the importance of preserving Assamese culture and the need for both government and community initiatives to actively contribute to this cause.
"We should move forward collectively as Assamese individuals, and both government and community initiatives should work to protect Assamese culture," Sarma declared during his speech held at Swahid Smarak Khetra, Paschim Boragaon.
Sarma expressed concern over incidents during which the state's government workers, especially those in the revenue and forest departments allowed foreigners to acquire and occupy land. According to the Chief Minister, the new law would halt these kinds of things and make sure that the people and the state of Assam are safeguarded.
"We must be resolute in our stance that outsiders cannot purchase land and establish businesses in these areas," Sarma added.
Additionally, he cited incidents in which Assamese government workers, especially those in the revenue department acted against the interests of the state. Sarma highlighted particular incidents in Garukhuti, Kaziranga, and Batadrava where it was discovered that Assamese workers were engaged in practices that jeopardized Assam's cultural identity.
