Digital Desk: Stranded students from Assam who got stuck in Sikkim's flood-stricken areas have been successfully evacuated and sent back to their home state, latest reports stated.
Six buses from the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) were deployed for the operation to bring the students back to Guwahati safely. According to reports, Sikkim Manipal University was home to the vast majority of these pupils.
Assam government representatives have arrived in Sikkim to oversee and facilitate the evacuation operation, according to a confirmation from the Assam Chief Minister's Office earlier today.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously declared on October 6 that two senior officers had been sent to coordinate the evacuation of 160 stranded students from Sikkim's Rongpo and Majitar regions.
Approximately 130 students from Assam who were studying in the Himalayan state of Sikkim have reportedly returned to Assam. Ranoj Pegu, the minister of education for Assam, welcomed these students on Monday.
They were returned from Sikkim by a group of Assam government representatives headed by Samir Sinha, the Principal Secretary to the Assam Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, the body of Mitu Kalita, an Indian army jawan who perished in the recent flash floods in Sikkim, was sent to his native village of Hatkhola, close to Ananda Bazar in the Baksa district.
The disaster occurred while Mitu was in West Sikkim for training. Along with the military, Assam Police, and local officials, Cabinet Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass paid floral tribute to the jawan on behalf of the State Government. The body of the soldier was disposed of in military honour and was consigned to flames.
