Digital Desk: Assam Education Minister Ranuj Pegu said that the Assam Government is planning to stop recruiting teachers in colleges where student enrollment is low.

He also informed that the government is preparing to merge the higher education institutions where student enrolment is lacking.

The Education Minister has directed the Department of Higher Education to draft a similar policy to Siksha Khetra aiming to merge Colleges and to stop recruiting teachers in such colleges. He said that this policy  aims “to merge Colleges or Departments having low enrolment and to stop recruiting teachers against vacancies in dept with low enrolment.”

Assam government introduced a scheme in 2016, Siksha Khetra, for amalgamation and merger of different Schools in Assam. The Assam government has shuttered thousands of schools in the past few years through the merger process.

The decision was taken at a meeting with the Principals and Governing Body Presidents of 79 Colleges having less than 500 enrolments conducted by the Higher Education Department. The meeting aimed at discussing a possible roadmap to enhance enrolment, Pegu informed on X.
“Enhancing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher Education is a priority of the Government,” Ranuj Pegu added.

Through the amalgamation process, the education department unites two schools due to various factors, including fewer student-teacher ratios, inadequate infrastructure, reduced enrollment, and higher operating costs.
