Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Maidams of Charaideo, burial mounds of Ahom royals, are on track to achieve UNESCO World Heritage Site status by the end of this year. The declaration came during an election rally at Charaideo under the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, where Sarma hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's support for Assam and urged the public to back him for a third term.
Sarma recounted his conversation with Prime Minister Modi, revealing that he had advocated for the nomination of Charaideo's Maidams as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite other proposals, including Sarnath, Sarma convinced the Prime Minister to prioritize Charaideo. Maidams, representing the burial tradition of the Tai Ahom dynasty, holds historical significance, with Charaideo boasting the best-preserved royal burials among the 386 explored sites.
Acknowledging the Prime Minister's affinity for Assam, Sarma highlighted Modi's symbolic gestures, such as wearing the 'gamusa' during key moments. The recent overnight stay by the PM at Kaziranga National Park further underscored Assam's appeal on the international stage.
Sarma also outlined various welfare schemes initiated by the state government, emphasizing their commitment to serving the people. He assured continued progress, combining the government's efforts with what he termed as "Modi ki guarantee" and "Mama ki warranty," a nod to his affectionate moniker 'Mama' in the state.
