Digital Desk: Assam’s Jamauna Boro has bagged the silver medal at the Elorda Cup which has been held in Kazakhstan’s capital Nur-Sultan.

Jamuna, who is from the Sonitpur district's Dhekiajuli, defeated the local fighter in the 54 Kg semi-final on Sunday with a clinical and commanding performance.

Jamuna, who won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships, gave her best against Nigina Uktamova of Uzbekistan.

Despite her efforts, she ended up with a 0-5 loss in the 54 Kg final.

Notably, Alfiya Pathan, the emerging world champion, and Gitika put up amazing performances to win gold medals. Kalaivani Srinivasan, the other female boxer from India, finished with a silver medal.

In the women's +81kg final, Nagpur girl Alfiya easily defeated 2016 world champion and strong contender Lazzat Kungeibayeva by a score of 5-0 without breaking a sweat, while Gitika won over fellow Indian Kalaivani by a score of an exhilarating 4-1 in the gripping all-Indian women's 48kg final.

It may be mentioned that for the two young athletes, Alfiya and Gitika, it was also their first senior international competition.
