Sushil Paul, the convenor of the committee said that the people of Hailakandi and Mizoram are struggling as the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has not introduced any direct train to Hailakandi and Mizoram.

Digital Desk: A large group of demonstrators from different districts of Assam's Barak Valley- Hailakandi, Sribhumi, and Cachar districts along with Tripura staged a three-hour-long protest in the Jantar Mantar of New Delhi on Thursday. The protest was organized under the banner of the Silchar-Lumding Broadgauge Sangram Committee.

The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw demanding a direct train from Guwahati to Bairabi (Mizoram) via Hailakandi district and starting the construction of the proposed Chandranathpur-Lanka second rail route.  

Sushil Paul, the convenor of the committee said that the people of Hailakandi and Mizoram are struggling as the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has not introduced any direct train to Hailakandi and Mizoram.

The passengers are facing difficulties as they have to travel to Badarpur railway station, Sribhumi district spending a huge amount only to catch a train.

The convenor added that a 12-hour-long Hailakandi district bandh has been called by the Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Samiti on April 8 to demand a direct train from Guwahati.
Paul threatens to escalate the protest if the authorities remain silent and do not take action.

The Tripura convenor of the committee Sanjoy Choudhury said that the efforts to develop a rail route in the region will continue till its implementation.
