Bengaluru: Basavaraj Bommai will be sitting on the Chief Minister’s after BS Yediyurappa’s resignation from the position yesterday. Following the announcement of his name, Bommai’s family’s political history came into the fore. His father, SR Bommai, occupied the CM’s position for a brief period in the 1980s. but brought in a whole lot of difference in the Indian Politics.

Bommai who is currently serving as Karnataka’s Home Minister, was a likely choice and can be justified considering his family’s political history.

An MLA from Shiggaon in central Karnataka's Haveri district, Mr Bommai, too, is a Lingayat, like BS Yediyurappa, although the term 'Basava' also means ox in Kannada, it resonates the name of Basaveshwara, the 12th century founder of the community.

Before joining the BJP, he was with the Janata Dal United, defecting, along with 22 others JDU functionaries.
