Guwahati: The disputed dumping ground at Boragaon, Guwahati has been finally closed from today that is August 4, 2021.

The dumping ground started functioning in 2008 and has been in the eye of a storm since then for affecting the environment, posing a big threat to its neighboring protected site of Deepor Beel wetlands and wildlife for a very long time.

The ground would be daily mounted by 522 metric tonnes of garbage brought in by 27 trucks.

Locals have been protesting against the dumping ground being set up near the Deepor Beel, which harmed the surrounding ecology and wildlife.

Based on petitions filed since 2014, followed by numerous hearings, the National Green Tribunal in April 2019 directed Gauhati Municipal Corporation to shift the Boragaon dumping site within two months.

On the directions of the National Green Tribunal, the dumping site has finally been closed today.
