Digital Desk: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) can only deal with the problems of Hindu Bengalis.

He said this while attacking Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia for criticizing the BJP over a large number of Hindu families receiving notifications to verify their citizenship in the recent few days in Udalguri and Tamulpur districts.

Saikia stated that the BJP campaigns in every poll about protecting Hindu families, yet in Assam, members of that community are being 'harassed' to prove their citizenship. "In the last few weeks, many families in Udalguri and Tamulpur have received notices to prove their citizenship," he asserted.

In response to Saikia's remark, the Assam CM said, "CAA is the only solution to these problems. We do not have any alternative way to address the citizenship issues the Hindu Bengali people are facing unless it is implemented."

CM Sarma also made fun of the media over the CAA problem. "When we emphasize CAA, the media continues to attack us," Sarma said.

Notably, despite the fact that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in both Houses of Parliament in December 2019, the rules to implement the Act have yet to be framed, which is usually completed within six months after the President of India signs a law. If a ministry or department fails to do so within the prescribed time frame, they must ask for a grace period from the Committee on Subordinate Legislation, stating their reasons for the extension.

The Union Home Ministry has already taken multiple extensions in order to formulate the CAA regulations.
