Digital Desk: After a month of arduous training at Siachen Battle School with other personnel, Captain Shiva Chouhan of the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps became the first woman officer to be operationally deployed at the world's highest battlefield, Siachen.

Capt Shiva Chouhan is a Bengal Sapper from Rajasthan. She attended school in Udaipur and graduated from the NJR Institute of Technology in Udaipur with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

She lost her father when she was 11 years old, and her mother, a housewife, raised her. She was inspired to join the Indian Armed Forces since childhood, and she demonstrated remarkable fervour during training at Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, before being commissioned into the Engineer Regiment in May 2021.

Captain Shiva demonstrated grit and commitment by successfully leading the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial in July 2022, covering a distance of 508 kilometres. The officer subsequently accepted the task of commanding the Sura Soi Engineer Regiment on the world's highest battlefield, and based on her performance, she was chosen to attend the Siachen Battle School.

The officer was placed through rigorous training at the battle school, where she trained with other Indian Army commanders. Endurance training, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue, and survival exercises were all part of the programme. Despite numerous hurdles, Captain Shiva Chouhan completed the programme with unwavering dedication.

After a difficult trek, she was admitted into the Siachen Glacier on January 2. The Sappers, lead by Capt Shiva Chouhan, will be in charge of several military engineering activities and will be stationed at the location for three months.
