Beijing: China's National People's Congress on Friday formally announced a rule intended to preserve online user data secrecy.

It has implemented the policy starting November 1, according to state media outlet Xinhua.

The law declares that the administration of private data must have a fair and objective purpose. Additionally, it shall be restricted to the "minimum range required to accomplish the purposes of handling" data.

It further sets out requirements for firms to handle private data, including taking an individual's permission and setting out guidelines for securing data security when information is carried outside the nation.

The law also asks private data handlers to select an individual in charge of private data security and requests handlers to carry periodic inspections to guarantee agreement with the law.
