New Delhi: Immunization with a combination of Covaxin and Covishield, the covid-19 vaccines in India gives better protection against Covid-19, the latest study of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.

The study carried out at Uttar Pradesh this year claimed, “The immunization with combination of an adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine after inactivated whole virus vaccine was not only safe but also gave better protection against the variant strains of SARS-CoV-2.”

“Such mixed treatment will help to overcome the challenges of covid-19 vaccine and will remove uncertainty around people’s mind related to the vaccine.” the study suggests.

However, it is yet to be reviewed by the specialist.

Earlier, on July 30, following an application by Christian Medical College, a Central Drugs Standard Control Organization committee suggests conducting a study on mixing both the Covaxin and Covishield vaccines.

In July this year, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan recommends not mixing covid-19 vaccines from different companies, quoting it as a ‘dangerous trend’ as it has limited data.

The Chief scientist asserted, “We are having a limited data about the vaccines, so trying mix and match will arise a muddled situation in the country.”
