Digital Desk: The Vadodara City Police booked 96 people on rioting and murder attempt charges on Tuesday after a communal clash broke out in the city's Panigate area at around 1 a.m. due to a disagreement over bursting firecrackers on Diwali. The case has been handed over to the Vadodara Crime Detection Branch (DCB).

The FIR lodged at Panigate police station by Assistant Sub Inspector Gopal Mangaldas states that the clash began over an altercation regarding airborne firecrackers being fired from areas of both communities. The clash turned violent around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, when mobs began pelting stones from Kahar Mohalla and Nalbandwada Mohalla, two areas dominated by people from two different communities, according to the FIR.

As per the FIR, a two-wheeler parked near the medical centre was set on fire, and a petrol bomb was thrown from a home in the Nalbandwada area with the "intention to kill police personnel."

According to a police statement issued Tuesday evening, 20 stone pelters were identified and detained on the spot, while 26 others were booked after being identified from CCTV footage.

The accused have been charged under Indian Penal Code sections 307 (attempt to murder), 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of an offense committed in pursuit of common object), 336 (rash or negligent act endangering human life or personal safety), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house), and 440 (mischief committed after preparation to cause death).
