The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's highest decision-making body, met on Sunday to approve the schedule for the election of the next AICC president.

On September 22, the party president election will be announced, and nominations can be submitted starting on September 24 and running through September 30. If necessary, the election will be held on October 17.

Along with Sonia Gandhi, interim head of the Congress, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi virtually attended the CWC meeting. At 3:30 pm, the online CWC meeting got underway.

On August 28th, the Congress Working Committee met, presided over by Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi.

Days have passed since the resignations of young leader Jaiveer Shergill and party veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad. Rahul Gandhi was criticized by Azad in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi for "demolishing the party's whole consultation structure."

Anand Sharma, a member of the G-23 dissident group, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Madhusudan Mistry, K. C. Venugopal, former union ministers Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, and P. Chidambaram, and chief ministers of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot and Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel were also present.

Earlier, according to party sources, the election process would be delayed by no more than a few weeks, and the party would nominate a permanent leader by the end of October.

The election for the new party president will take place between August 21 and September 20 this year, the Congress said in October of last year.

District Committee Chiefs will be chosen between June 1 and July 20, state chiefs and AICC members between July 21 and August 20, and the AICC president between August 21 and September 20, according to a decision made by the CWC last year. Elections for block committees and one member of each state Congress unit will take place from April 16 to May 31.

Rahul Gandhi, according to several party insiders, is continuing to stand by his decision to decline the position of AICC president.

On Wednesday, Gehlot attempted to downplay rumours that he was the front-runner for the position of Congress president and stated that attempts will be made up until the very end to urge Rahul Gandhi to assume control of the party once more.

Gehlot's comments had been made a day after he had met with Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress, which had sparked rumours that the two had discussed Gehlot being the next party leader.

After the Congress suffered its second consecutive loss in the 2019 parliamentary elections, Rahul Gandhi resigned as party leader. After an open uprising by a group of leaders known as the G-23 in August 2020, Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party once more as interim president, also offered to resign. However, the CWC encouraged her to stay in office.
