Itanagar: A road construction company has illegally detained as many as 17 Assam labourers and has kept them in forceful confinement in Arunachal Pradesh since August 16, claimed the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) on Sunday.

AASAA has alleged that the workers are being physically harassed and threatened with dire consequences by the authorities of the construction company if they leave the project mid-way.

The workers were on an assignment for the construction of a national highway in Arunachal Pradesh.

The 17 detainees have been identified as – Deep Tanti, Subham Tanti, Pradip Pandav, Tankeswar Das, Biju Telenga, Dimbeswar Telenga, Sankar Masuwa, Bijoy Sasoni, Bishal Munda, Binod Munda, Arjun Nayak, Krishna Bhumiz, Ramesh Ghatowar, Uday Rawat, Dharmeswar Bhumiz, Yadav Manki, and Badal Manki.

AASAA also alleged that two contractors who escorted the workers, have been also detained by the construction company. The student body has urged the Sivasagar administration and the Superintendent of Sivasagar Police, to immediately intervene in the matter and take necessary actions to rescue the labourers.
