Digital Desk: In the late night, a huge number of Assam Police surrounded the SNBC Hostel of Cotton University in Guwahati after a serious allegation of kidnapping and assault has arisen.  The incident  is based on a pre-election confrontation between students of the university.

Debashish Barman, a student affiliated with the SRB Hostel and a supporter of a Cotton University student election candidate, was allegedly abducted and brutally beaten inside a room of the SNBC Hostel. Though, it was confirmed that, Debashish had never stayed in a hostel, however, he was a participant in the student election campaign. Until the previous year, he was a resident of SNBC.

Police registered an FIR at Panbazar Police Station, after which a major operation was launched. The room where Debashish was allegedly held and assaulted was raided, and several items used in the assault were seized. However, the accused students are currently absconding.

According to the sources, a number of ex-SNBC hostel residents had been engaged in the incident. This underlines an escalating problem in Cotton University, whereby former residents of hostels often disrupt student elections and often leading to violent clashes.

Debashish was reportedly expelled from SNBC last year after falling out with the hostel community over election-related disputes.
