Shillong: In view of the spike in Delta variant and Omicron cases in the country, the Meghalaya government has decided to re-impose restrictions on public gatherings from January 5, Shillong chief minister Conrad Sangma said.

Following a review meeting on the covid situation in Shillong today, CM Sangma stated that the movement of private cars in Shillong would be restricted. The odd-even number system will be used for private vehicles in the state.

“We’ve decided to reintroduce public gathering restrictions. We’ll only allow gatherings for specific reasons and in very small numbers. With the proper changes, there will be a few more constraints. In this regard, the appropriate Deputy Commissioners shall issue the requisite order.” said CM Sangma.

“The Delta version and the second wave had pushed us. In comparison to the second wave, we are now more prepared. We continue to believe that safeguards should be taken by both citizens and the government.” he added.

Moreover, People entering the state, excluding those who are double vaccinated, will be required to provide a covid-19 negative test certificate obtained 72 hours before entering the state or will be tested at the entry point.

Further, the CM informed that the night curfew will be re-imposed from 10 pm in Shillong city, including the other districts. He also added that the Deputy Commissioners would issue the required order in this regard.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, Meghalaya has recorded two new COVID 19 cases and four recoveries. However, zero fatality has been reported in the last 24 hours.

The total number of active cases now remains at 73. On the other hand, the total number of recovered cases is 83,292, and the total number of deaths is 1,484.
