Jorhat: The state government has sprung up into action after the tragic Nimatighat incident that killed two passengers of the ill-fated boat. Even after the horrifying incident, it seems the officials of the state government are yet to wake up from their slumber.

In yet another such incident of system failure and callousness showed by the officials, the Jorhat police arrested six persons in connection with the ferry incident that took place on Saturday. A criminal case has been filed against the six persons on the orders of the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The arrested persons are respectively -

  1. Dhanbar Das
  2. Jogen Das
  3. Biju Kumar Das
  4. Jayanta Dutta
  5. Binod Baruah
  6. Babul Neog

It maybe mentioned here that on Saturday evening, a ferry owned by the Inland Water Transport department, de-boarded extra passengers even after they had brought their tickets for the journey. The passengers remained at the ghat for several hours, without food and water. There was lot of reaction from the locals following this incident, forcing the administration to take strict action against the concerned department.
