Guwahati: Seeking an investigation into the fake encounters that have taken place since the Assam chief minister assumed office in May 2021, a New Delhi based advocate has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at the Gauhati High Court.

As per the PIL, advocate Arif Jwadder has appealed to the Gauhati High Court to order the Assam police to submit all the details of the encounters which happened after CM Sarma assumed the office.

Moreover, he requests the court to hand over the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a Special Investigation Team (SIT), or to the police of the other state under the observation Gauhati High Court.

Reportedly, after CM Sarma assumed the office, a total of 80 cases of the encounter were reported this year, out of which 28 were killed and 48 sustained injuries.

The PIL also sought financial assistance for the victim’s family after due verification.

Further, Jwadder claimed that Assam doesn’t have human rights courts in every district, which is obligatory under Section 30 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

Following Jwadder claim, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) ordered an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Director-General of Assam police.

Moreover, NHRC, in an email to the DGP, asked if they received any notice or order from the Assam Human Rights Commission on the issue, and if received, it asked to send its response within four weeks.
