Dr Munishwar Chandar Dawar, who still accepts Rs 20 as payment from his patients, has been awarded the Padma Shri...

Digital Desk: A Madhya Pradesh doctor who cures patients for Rs 20 has been awarded the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian honour.

Dr. Munishwar Chandar Dawar, 77, sees approximately 200 patients per day and collects a modest payment of Rs 20 from them.

Dr. Dawar was born on January 16, 1946, in Punjab, Pakistan. After Partition, he moved to India. He earned his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from Jabalpur in 1967.

He also spent a year in the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Since 1972, he has been giving health care services to the people of Jabalpur.

Dr. Dawar began treating patients for Rs 2 and now charges only Rs 20 in fees.

Dr. Dawar stated, "There was definitely some debate in the house about charging such a modest charge, but there was no disagreement. Because our sole goal was to serve the public, we did not raise the fees. The primary success mantra is that if you work diligently, you will achieve success, and success is also valued."

Dr. Dawar also said after receiving the Padma Shri award, "Sometimes, even if it is delayed, hard work pays off. I won this prize as a result of that, as well as the blessings of the people."
