Digital Desk: The Election Commission of India has mandated that the international border between Meghalaya and Bangladesh be sealed, as well as the state border with Assam, till the day of voting in the poll-bound state.
It should be noted that voting for the 60-member Meghalaya legislative assembly will take place on February 27 (Monday), with results expected on March 2.
Preventive steps have been implemented in order to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
Commenting on the subject, State's chief election officer F R Kharkong said, "All districts sharing the international border with Bangladesh have been directed to issue orders to seal. People's movement in border areas will likewise be restricted."
According to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, unfettered movement between India and Bangladesh increases the "potential of law and order problems," posing a threat to human life, safety, and public serenity.
Meghalaya shares a 445-kilometre border with Bangladesh and an 885-kilometre border with Assam.
The district administration has also prohibited residents from moving within a one-kilometre radius of the international border. The functioning of 'border haats' has also been postponed till the election procedure has been finished.
