Digital Desk: Assam Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Ashok Singhal announced on Wednesday that an eviction drive will be initiated in the city as part of the "Mission Flood-Free Guwahati" plan.

"Eviction drives will be conducted soon in Guwahati at areas where folks have illegally encroached on lands near rivers and streams," Singhal said.

In Rukminigaon, the eviction process has already begun.

The minister has accused the residents of Guwahati of creating the artificial floods and waterlogging that occur whenever there is a heavy downpour in the city.

"Various initiatives have been made to make the city flood-free, including desilting of the Bahini River, which flows through the southern portion of Guwahati, and the Laksmi stream," the minister said.

The government has also undertaken a development project to build a guard wall along the Bharalu River.

Meanwhile, drainage desilting has begun in various parts of Guwahati.

Desilting operations were completed yesterday at Sijubari and Silsako following the reduction of the water level.

Moreover, a group from Ahmedabad will be brought in to drive the super sucker machine.
