Guwahati: Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharya, Ex-IPS officer of Assam cadre, who dealt with the dealt with the problem of illegal migration from East Pakistan/Bangladesh for a very long time, and was also involved in detection and deportation of foreign nationals, passed away today in Guwahati's Nemcare Hospital.

The former senior government official passed away at 4:30 am in the morning after a prolonged fight with old age related diseases.

Bhattacharya is credited with for his active role in the liberation of Bangladesh During the Bangladesh War of Liberation (1971). He trained two batches of the 'Mukti Bahini' for which he was awarded the prestigious Friends of Liberation War Honour by the Government of Bangladesh in 2013.

Years later, he became actively engaged with the historic Assam Movement and was imprisoned twice for his involvements. Bhattacharya was also a columnist and author of several novels and socio-economic treatises. He is also passionately engaged with angling and rose gardening.
