travelling 415 kilometres to Bengaluru's Yeshwantpur market, a farmer from Gadag
in north Karnataka earned Rs.8.36 for 205 kg of onions. The transaction receipt
has gone viral on the internet.
The New
Indian Express identified the farmer as Pawadeppa Hallikeri. The wholesaler who
purchased the onions paid Rs. 200 per quintal, subtracted 377 for freight
charges, and added 24 for porter fees for a total of Rs. 8.36. The
disheartened farmer posted his struggle on the internet, warning other farmers
not to sell their harvest in Karnataka's capital.
Netizens
were taken aback by the incident. "This is how the double engine govt of
@narendramodi & @BSBommai is tripling farmers' income," one of them
said (Adani). Gadag farmer travels 415 kilometres to Bengaluru to sell onions
and receives Rs.8.36 each 205 kg!"
Farmers
in the north Karnataka district are mulling protests against the government in
order to get the government to establish an MSP - minimum support price - for
their crop. This year has also seen a lot of rain in Gadag, which has caused
crop damage and made the onions smaller in size.
