  • Heavy monsoon rainfall on Friday brought substantial stretches of National Highway-27 at Jorabat to a standstill, causing severe waterlogging and triggering massive traffic snarls across the Guwahati outskirts

Recent heavy monsoon showers have once again plunged parts of Guwahati's outskirts into chaos, as National Highway-27 at Jorabat became inundated on Friday. The sudden deluge led to extensive waterlogging and massive traffic congestion, leaving numerous vehicles stranded and reviving persistent concerns over the recurring 'artificial flooding' issues plaguing the region.

Beyond Jorabat, reports indicated significant water accumulation in other crucial areas including 10th Mile, 9th Mile, the 8th Mile Hanuman Mandir vicinity, and Khanapara. This widespread disruption severely impacted normal traffic flow, affecting thousands of commuters traveling between Guwahati, Upper Assam, and Meghalaya along the vital highway corridor.

At Jorabat, the intensity of the rainfall quickly rendered several sections of the highway virtually unmotorable. Many vehicles broke down after attempting to navigate the submerged roads, while the sight of ambulances caught in prolonged traffic queues raised serious questions about emergency response capabilities during such incidents.

As water levels continued to rise, traffic authorities promptly issued an urgent advisory. Light motor vehicles heading towards Guwahati were redirected from Digaru, while those exiting the city were advised to take alternative routes from Koinadhara, aiming to alleviate the severe congestion.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenge faced by local administration and commuters alike, as the region grapples with inadequate drainage infrastructure unable to cope with the monsoon's intensity, leading to repeated disruptions in daily life and economic activity.
