Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the police have been provided total "operational freedom" to administer the drug traffickers and dealers.

He has additionally asked to "act decisively" to eradicate the drug hazard from society. He stated that prolonged action on catching the drug supply and consumption chains throughout the Northeast has been undertaken in the last two years following Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced specific regulations to DGPs of the states in the area concerning the issue.

Talking at a drug control event in Golaghat, Sarma stated, "I want to give this clear message to the drug dealers that as the chief minister, I have given full freedom to the police to take toughest actions as allowed by law against this crime."

"The Assam Police will set its boundaries and fulfill its responsibilities. After getting this operational freedom, police has been more relentless in its pursuit against the drug dealers," he stated.

During another event in Diphu, Sarma said that the police have been provided operational right to act strongly and decisively within the order to eradicate the illegal business.

He emphasized that various radical outfits were practicing drug-addicted youths as their Organisation, though the ULFA was not amid such organizations.

The CM stated that issues proposed by some MLAs in the assembly over the firing of drug dealers while they were attempting to escape police custody are "misplaced" as any forbearance that could head to the disappearance of even one drug dealer would spell destruction for more youths of the state.

Sarma stated that the police personnel was working within the powers vested on them by the government. Sarma told he has requested the police to practice the toughest laws to control the drug threat as it is damaging the social framework of the state and exerting a complete generation into obscurity.
