Akhil Gogoi stated that he and the three others have been summoned to the Special NIA Court on February 23...

Digital Desk: The Gauhati High Court issued the National Investigation Agency (NIA) permission on Thursday to file charges against Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi and three of his friends in connection with anti-CAA protests and suspected Maoist affiliations.

Hearing the probe agency's plea against the verdict of a Special NIA Court granting the four a clean chit, a division Bench comprised of Justices Suman Shyam and Malasri Nandi directed it to proceed with filing charges after reopening the case.

"The High Court granted the NIA's request to revive the case and charge the four people. The Special NIA Court would hear the matter again "Santanu Borthakur, Mr. Gogoi's advocate, informed PTI.

Mr. Gogoi stated that he and the three others have been summoned to the Special NIA Court on February 23.

"I want to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court. I am optimistic about the outcome" stated Raijor Dal chief.

On July 1, 2021, the Special NIA Court discharged Mr. Gogoi and his three companions for their alleged role in the violent anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act riot in Assam in December 2019.
