Amidst the recurring flood devastation gripping Assam, Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi has made an urgent appeal to the Central government, advocating for a substantial special relief package amounting to ₹10,000 crore. The Kaliabor MP underscored the severe and perennial impact of the floods on the state's infrastructure, economy, and the lives of millions, stressing the critical need for robust financial intervention from the Centre.
Gogoi highlighted that Assam faces an annual catastrophe, with vast areas submerged, displacing countless families and causing immense damage to agricultural lands, homes, and public utilities. He argued that the scale of destruction necessitates a dedicated financial injection beyond standard disaster relief allocations to facilitate comprehensive recovery and rehabilitation efforts across the affected districts.
In conjunction with his demand for increased aid, the Congress leader also raised pertinent questions regarding the allocation and utilisation of the PM CARES Fund. Gogoi expressed bewilderment over the alleged lack of deployment of these funds, which were established for emergency situations, to states like Assam that frequently grapple with widespread natural calamities. He urged for greater transparency and accountability in how these significant resources are managed and distributed during times of crisis.
The call for a special package reflects the growing sentiment among public representatives and citizens alike for more proactive and substantial central assistance to mitigate the long-term effects of floods in Assam. As the state continues to battle the challenges posed by nature's fury, the demand for both immediate relief and a clear strategy for fund utilisation gains critical importance.
