Digital Desk: Assam Police head, GP Singh on Tuesday stated that the Assam police have decided to conduct a fitness survey of cops and ask those who are deemed "unfit" to take voluntary retirement from service.

The action was carried out following directions from the chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the home portfolio, according to Singh, the director general of police (DGP). He stated that all police officers, including those from the Indian Police Service (IPS), will have their BMIs "professionally recorded."

“We plan to give three months to all Assam police personnel including IPS and Assam Police Service (APS) officers till August 15 and then start BMI assessment in the next 15 days,” Singh said on Twitter.

“All those who are in obese (BMI 30+) category would be offered another three months’ time to reduce weight (till November end) and after that VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) option, except those who have genuine medical ground like thyroidism etc,” he added.

Singh stated that on August 16, he would be the first to take the BMI recording.

The choice between the VRS and the compulsory retirement plan (CRS) would be given to police officers who are alcoholics by habit, fat, and the subject of corruption proceedings, the chief minister declared on April 30.

"Three hundred police officers and jawans (in the state police) are habitual drinkers, and their bodies have been harmed by excessive alcohol use. We have VRS provision for them," Sarma had stated.

A few days before that declaration, the CM had told top police officers to "remove deadwood from the force" to make the state police a more functional organisation.
