Some of the mummies' mouths were filled with gold flakes shaped like human tongues.

Digital Desk: In Egypt, archaeologists discovered several ancient mummies with golden tongues.

The mummies were discovered in the central Nile Delta at the Quweisna necropolis.

The Supreme Council of Antiquities' Egyptian archaeological mission discovered an extension of the archaeological Quesna cemetery.

The ancient tombs date from various periods of history.

According to Mustafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, they contain a number of mummies with golden tongues.

Some of the mummies' mouths were filled with gold flakes shaped like human tongues.

The mummies were in poor condition, but the skeletons with gold linen were still intact, according to Egypt Independent.

At the site, there were also some wooden coffins and copper nails used in those coffins.

Even though they have been discovered before, the golden tongues remain a mystery.

The site, discovered in 1989, is thought to have been occupied between 300 BCE and 640 CE during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.

A skull with a gold tongue-shaped ornament framed in its yawning mouth was discovered in early 2021.

Then, at the end of 2021, a man, a woman, and a child mummy with golden tongues were discovered, dating back more than 2,500 years.

At the time of the discoveries, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities suspected that embalmers had placed gold in the mummies' mouths to ensure the dead could navigate the afterlife.
