The officers thought,  they were approaching a tea garden in Assam but somehow   they crossed the state border and reached Nagaland’s Mokokchung district…

Digital Desk: A team of 16 members from Assam Police got into trouble with their by following Google maps during a raid they ended up crossing into Nagaland’s Mokokchung district. The event occurred on the 7th of January, moreover out of confusion, locals mistook them as being armed miscreants, became quite violent and also attack n detained them

The operation was done by Jorhat police where the police went  to arrest an accused person. Following the instruction of the GPS system, the officers thought that they were approaching a tea garden in Assam but by some way they crossed the state border and reached Nagaland’s Mokokchung district.  Out 16officers, 13 of them were dressed as local dress, which further increased the locals’ distrust of the officers. The misunderstanding degenerated into a physical confrontation in which one officer was attacked and the whole team was arrested.

When the locals realized that those were genuine police authorities and realized their mistake, the locals immediately informed the Jorhat police who in turn informed the Superintendent of Police, Mokokchunga. Rescue team was able to negotiate freedom of five officers, including the injured ones. However, 11 others were held detainee until the following morning and later was was released.

They have successfully brought back the team to Jorhat from the operations. This episode demonstrates that information obtained from digital navigation applications at the border areas can be quite dangerous if there is no clear understanding of the further action plan and knowledge of the area.
