As recommended by the WHO, the Indian government should impose a 75% GST on tobacco products. According to the most recent tax slabs, the nation charges a 22% GST on bidis, a 53% GST on cigarettes, and a 64% GST on smokeless tobacco.
Despite the implementation of the GST, the standing committee has observed that the tax on tobacco products has not increased much.
The committee emphasised that drinking alcohol and using smoke both increase the risk of getting cancer.
In India, smoking is already not permitted in public areas. If breaking the law, a fine of up to Rs 200 may be issued. Advertisements for tobacco products are also forbidden by the government.
