Guwahati: The Assam government will grant one-time financial aid of Rs 1 lakh to families of people who have died of COVID-19, State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog has asserted.

While presenting the budget for 2021-22 in the Assam Assembly on Friday, Neog declared this is the first scheme of such kind by any government in the nation.

The state government had previously announced the 'Chief Minister Shishu Seva Scheme' for children who lost their parents due to coronavirus and the 'Chief Minister COVID-19 Widow Support Scheme' for widows.

The modalities for applying and availing the compensation under the current schemes will be announced by the Health Department in due course and the plans will cost the exchequer about Rs 40 crore, said Neog.

Collectively, 4,888 deaths of grown-ups, including 1,345 women, due to COVID-19 have been listed in the state till July 13, Neog stated.

Results of 56 minors (less than 18 years of age) have additionally died due to the virus throughout the same period.
