Digital Desk: In a collaboration effort led by Mission Rabies Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) and Just Be Friendly (JBF) and supported by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Assam, and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the Assam Rabies Elimination Project was launched on Wednesday. It is an effort to eradicate rabies, a deadly zoonotic viral encephalitis from the state by the year 2030.
The project, which focuses on vaccination, education, surveillance, and awareness, was inaugurated at the Gauhati Press Club by Mrigen Sarania, the Mayor of GMC. The other guests who attended the inaugural event were the Member of the Veterinary Council of India Dr. Dandeswar Deka, Environmentalist Moloy Baruah, Founder and Managing Trustee of JBF Sashanka Sekhar Dutta, and Director of Operations for Mission Rabies India Dr. Balaji Chandrashekar, Veterinary Officer Dr. Kailash Chamuah, Professors of the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara among others.
A dedicated Rabies hotline number 9706049585 was also inaugurated by the Mayor of GMC Mrigen Sarania. It will encourage people to report any suspected cases of rabies so that authorities can work swiftly.
The global Mission Rabies initiative by WVS was previously implemented in three Indian states Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
The initiative is divided into two parts with the target of Guwahati Metropolitan Area and three model districts.
Guwahati Metropolitan Area project focuses on the vaccination of nearly 70% dog population of the city. It also aims at awareness programs in educational institutions, hospitals, and public areas. At the same time, the three model districts project focuses on serving three districts of Assam for rabies-free implementation, mass vaccination, etc.
