Digital Desk: In the wee hours of 26th April , at around 3:40 AM, three young women lost their lives in a tragic road accident near Gate Hospital in the Mathgharia area of Guwahati.
The victims, reportedly associated with a private university, were travelling in a Swift car from the Gitanagar side when the vehicle rammed into a stationary truck parked along the roadside. The truck, a Tata 407 (registration number AS 01 FC 4908), had reportedly halted after unloading cement.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the car was completely mangled, and rescue teams had to use a JCB machine to extricate the bodies from the wreckage. Two of the women were declared dead at the scene, while the third, who was critically injured, was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Two of the deceased have been identified as Akanksha Saikia (23) from Sivasagar and Puja Saha (26) from Goalpara. The identity of the third victim is yet to be confirmed. Both identified victims were employed in the admissions department of Royal Global University.
The driver of the vehicle survived as the airbag deployed in time but is currently absconding. Personnel from Noonmati Traffic Police reached the spot promptly after receiving information and initiated rescue operations.
Jayanta Sarathi Bora visited the accident site and reviewed the circumstances leading to the incident. Police have traced the owner of the vehicle, and preliminary investigations suggest that the car had been rented from a car rental service. Authorities are continuing their investigation to locate the absconding driver and determine further details surrounding the accident.
