According to Guwahati Police, the seized cannabis is worth approximately Rs 7 lakhs in international drug markets.

Digital Desk: In yet another major haul, Guwahati Police on Monday seized a cannabis consignment weighing over 70 kilograms and detained two persons, officials informed.

According to preliminary reports, Guwahati Police conducted an operation at the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in the Betkuchi area of Guwahati based on specific inputs.

Following the operation, Guwahati Police officials reported that the total cannabis confiscation weighed approximately 77 kilograms.

According to Guwahati Police, the seized cannabis is worth approximately Rs 7 lakhs in international drug markets.

Furthermore, officials stated that the cannabis shipment was smuggled in from Tripura in a goods truck, concealed under the seats. Guwahati Police detained the truck's driver and co-pilot for questioning on smuggling charges.

Babul Biswas and Haradhan Hrishi Das, both Tripura residents, were detained by police during the operation in Guwahati.

The operation was led by Garchuk Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Satendra Singh Hazari. The truck used to smuggle in the shipment was seized. TR 01 AU 1894 was the registration number.

When questioned by reporters, one of the accused, Babul Biswas, stated, "We brought the cannabis from Agartala and it was supposed to be delivered here in Guwahati." We had packed the shipment beneath our seats."

“We were not told where exactly to deliver the consignment. Our masters are behind this smuggling nexus. We only follow their orders,” added the detained Biswas.

It should be noted that the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Guwahati foiled two major cannabis smuggling bids on consecutive days at the Guwahati Railway Station.

On March 24, GRP officials seized approximately 83 kilograms of cannabis from a Rajdhani express train numbered 20503 that was travelling from Dimapur to Delhi and had stopped at the Guwahati Railway Station. According to a police official, the seized cannabis shipment was estimated to be worth around Rs 40 lakhs.

GRP had made another major bust the day before, seizing 93.7 kilograms of cannabis from a Rajdhani express train en route to lower Assam before stopping in Guwahati.

However, no arrests could be made in connection with either of the cannabis busts.
