Digital Desk: Heavy downpour caused damage in numerous districts of Assam and Meghalaya, causing traffic congestion on Thursday morning.
Moreover, the flood situation in Assam's Tamulpur district has worsened after new parts of the district were swamped today by flood waters from multiple rivers.
In Assam, a part of a bridge fell on June 15 in the Subankhata region of the Baksa district due to heavy rains and an increase in the Dihing River's water level.
The flood levels of the Borolia, Pagladiya, and Motonga rivers have overflowed, submerging many villages and affecting almost 20,000 people.
Several villages in the district, including Hahakata, Balabari, Dwarkuchi, Chapatol, Cholikonda, Guwakuchi Niz-Defeli, and Kekrikuchi, are currently underwater and SDRF troops are assisting with rescue operations, district administration stated.
After flood waters inundated several villages, several people were relocated to safer areas.
A flood-affected resident of Hahkata village stated that the embankment near the Balabari area was breached by flood waters this year too.
"The state minister of water resources had previously visited the area, but the embankment strengthening work had not been completed properly. We're in the midst of a major crisis," the flood victim said.
As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the current flood wave has affected roughly 75,000 people in 18 districts of the state as of June 15.
The ASDMA flood report said that the flood had affected 314 villages under 37 revenue circles, and flood waters have inundated 1731.18 hectares of agriculture.
Meanwhile, in the East Jaintia Hills area of Meghalaya, several sections of National Highway-6 under the Lumshnong Police Station bounds were extensively damaged due to an unrelenting torrential downpour causing traffic inconvenience.
