Digital Desk: Human Metapneumovirus is in a vicious spree in India after it had  unleashed widespread panic in China. In Bengaluru two children aged 8 months and 3 months were found infected by the virus. Also, a 2 months baby in Ahmedabad is also confirmed positive. One 5 month old is also tested positive in Kolkata along with that two other children were tested positive in Chennai. These three children are also receiving treatment in private hospitals.

According to the specialists, this virus targets mainly children below the age of 15 years and people aged 60 years and above. The prime cause amongst newborns is that they have a very low immunity level. These newborns are essentially deprived of adequate antibodies that are required to protect from infections at birth. Furthermore, the respiratory structures in them are relatively sensitive making them prone to the virus. In the same way, in elderly people there is a decrease of
immunity resulting from aging and those people have may risks developing an infection.

HMPV dates back to the 1950s, says AIIMS Delhi Professor .HMPV infects the upper and lower respiratory tracts and might extend to the ear . Newborns may present with typical cold – mild fever, cough, and runny nose mainly. In its worse ear, it leads to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) or bronchitis. Other signs may also ‘present including cough, increased breathing rate, and drawing in of the chest wall due to strain, compounding the condition.

Given the reality that the virus transmits in the air it is very dangerous for especially the most vulnerable in the society. The people that are with children, especially the parents, must exercise utmost care and cleanliness in order to protect the kids. The infection is highly curable if diagnosed early and proper medical care is sought as soon as possible.
