Digital Desk: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a concerning forecast for east and peninsular India, predicting a persistent heatwave for the next 48 hours. Together, the northeast region is expected to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms until April 9, adding to the diverse weather patterns across the nation.
Earlier predictions by the IMD hinted at an elongated spell of scorching temperatures throughout central, northern plains, and southern India. This alarming forecast underscores the imminent onset of extreme heat from April to June, with central and western peninsular regions anticipated to bear the brunt of the heatwave's impact.
Isolated pockets in states like Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, North Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are expected to experience heightened heatwave conditions on April 5 and 6. Meanwhile, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry are bracing for hot and humid weather from April 5 to 9.
In stark contrast, the northeastern states, particularly Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Odisha, are slated to witness heavy rainfall during various intervals from April 5 to 9, providing some respite from the sweltering heat.

Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, emphasized the importance of election preparedness amidst these challenging weather conditions, highlighting collaborative efforts with state governments to mitigate risks.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra echoed the gravity of the situation, projecting an extended duration of 10-20 days of heatwave across different regions, far surpassing the normal span of four to eight days.
