Digital Desk: According to a police official, at least 13 people were killed and 35 were injured when a fire broke out at a nightclub in Thailand's eastern Chonburi province early Friday.

The fire started around 1 a.m. local time at the Mountain B nightclub, about 180 kilometres southeast of Bangkok, said Wuttipong Somjai, a superintendent at a local police station, by phone.

Local television footage showed people fleeing the club and emergency personnel putting out flames and searching the burned-out premises, which had shoes and bottles strewn about.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has assured victims' families that authorities will assist them, and he has urged entertainment venues across the country to install proper emergency exits and safety measures.
