Digital Desk: The health ministry reported on Monday that there were 605 new cases of COVID-19 in India, pushing the total number of active cases to 4,002.

Up until December 5, 2023, the number of cases per day had decreased to double digits; however, following the appearance of a novel coronavirus JN.1 sub-variant and the occurrence of cold weather, instances started to rise.
According to government sources, on December 31, 2023, 841 additional cases were reported after December 5, accounting for 0.2% of the peak occurrences reported in May 2021.
Approximately 92% of the total current patients were being treated at home while in recovery.
"The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in the new cases nor a surge in hospitalisation and mortality," sources said.
Three waves of COVID-19 have hit India in the past; the Delta wave, which is expected to last from April to June 2021, is expected to have the highest daily incidence of new cases and deaths. On May 7, 2021, the number of new cases and deaths reported was 414,188, with 3,915 fatalities.
Over 4.5 crore individuals have been infected since the pandemic started in early 2020, and in the roughly four years that have passed since then, over 5.3 lakh people have died nationwide.
The ministry's website states that over 4.4 crore people have recovered from the illness, translating to a 98.81 percent national recovery rate.
The ministry reports that 220.67 crore COVID-19 dosages have been given out nationwide thus far.
