Digital Desk: The World Bank's 25-member executive board elected former Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga to a five-year term as president on Wednesday, effective June 2. Banga, who is Indian by birth, will lead the lender in a new direction to address climate change and other global challenges.

As the only candidate to replace retiring World Bank director David Malpass, an economist and former employee of the U.S. Treasury under the Trump administration, Banga, 63, was nominated for the position by U.S. President Joe Biden in late February.
