The judgement will be delivered by a bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia on Thursday.

Digital Desk: The Supreme Court will issue its decision in Hijab Row today on a batch of petitions filed with the Karnataka High Court challenging the state's ban on hijab in educational institutions.

The high court had terminated the petitions filed by a section of Muslim students at the Government Pre-University Girls College in Karnataka’s Udupi in quest of authorization to wear the hijab inside classrooms, ruling it is not a part of the vital religious practise in the Islamic faith, on March 15.

The judgement will be delivered by a bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia on Thursday. The bench had set aside its decision on the pleas on September 22 after hearing arguments in the matter for 10 days. It has been argued that preventing Muslim girls from wearing the hijab to the classroom will put their education in danger as they might drop out.

The council also opposed including the state government's February 5, 2022 order, which prohibited students and faculty from wearing clothing that disrupted equality, integrity, and public order in schools and colleges, even though there have been some arguments that the matter is referred to a five-judge constitution bench. However, the counsel appearing for the state argued that the Karnataka government order that kicked up a row over hijab was "religion neutral."
