Digital Desk: A top ISIS terrorist who allegedly planned strikes on diplomatic missions in Afghanistan's capital has been executed by Taliban forces, according to a government official. After the Taliban seized power in August 2021, violence in Afghanistan substantially decreased.
However, security has deteriorated in the last year, with a spate of mass casualty strikes claimed by ISIS's regional chapter.
According to Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, Qari Fateh, the regional IS "intelligence and operations chief," was killed during an operation on Sunday night.
Fateh "personally oversaw recent operations in Kabul, including attacks on diplomatic offices, mosques, and other targets," Mujahid added.
According to the Taliban, another ISIS terrorist was killed in the operation on the cell, which was situated in Kabul's Khair Khana neighbourhood.
On Sunday night, residents in that area reported hearing gunshots. Taliban officials shared a video of two bodies laying in debris on Twitter.
In July 2022, the United Nations Security Council recognised Fateh as a top ISIS leader in control of military activities in India, Iran, and Central Asia.
ISIS has emerged as the Taliban's most dangerous security threat, carrying out attacks against foreigners, religious minorities, and government institutions.
Both parties share an austere Sunni Muslim doctrine, but ISIS seeks to establish a global "caliphate," whilst the Taliban seeks to rule an independent Afghanistan.
ISIS claimed responsibility for a gun raid on a Kabul hotel in December that injured five Chinese nationals.
The gang also targeted the Pakistani embassy in Kabul in December. It was termed an "assassination attempt" against Islamabad's ambassador.
In January, the outfit claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing outside Kabul's foreign ministry that killed at least ten people.
In September of last year, two Russian embassy employees were killed in a suicide bombing outside their mission, another attack claimed by ISIS. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide strike in Kabul in September 2022 that killed 54 people, including 51 women and girls.
