Digital Desk: A 43-year-old Islamic religious cleric was detained in Assam's Silchar for allegedly raping a minor girl.

The police stated that the incident took place on October 29. However, it came to light the next day when the minor girl's mother filed a police report.

Reportedly, after the minor's mother saw her daughter in a traumatized condition, she questioned her, following which the minor girl narrated the entire scenario.

"Like all parents in the Islamic society, we send our daughter for religious education. That day we saw her in a distressed state and she told us that the Maulavi touched her improperly and also threatened her," the rape survivor's mother said.

Meanwhile, police have filed a complaint against the accused cleric under sections 447, 376 AB, and 354 of the Indian Penal Code as well as under section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act.

The police stated that the cleric fled after the complaint was filed, but was apprehended and taken into custody from Silchar's Kanakpur area.
