Israel: One-year-old twin girls (names unrevealed) were born conjoined at the back of their heads. They have seen each other for the first time after undergoing rare separation surgery in Israel.

A 12-hour operation at the Soroka Medical Centre in the city of Beersheba took months of preparation. More than dozens of experts were called from Israel and abroad to perform the rarest surgery. Doctors say that the girls are recovering well.

"They are breathing and eating on their own," Eldad Silberstein, the head of Soroka's plastic surgery department.

It is the first time such an operation has ever been held in Israel. This rare surgery has been conducted 20 times worldwide.

Inflatable silicone bags were inserted into their heads months before their surgery to expand and stretch the skin. The new skin helped to seal their heads after the skulls were reconstructed.

The girls were born in August 2020. Now after successful surgery, they are expected to lead completely normal lives.
