Digital Desk: The Jammu and Kashmir Ladakh High Court has turned down a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought to make Hindi the official language of the two Union Territories.
While hearing the PIL, a division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey and Justice Vinod Chatterji Koul stated that the topic of the PIL falls firmly within the domain and powers of the executive.
"Because the subject matter of the PIL falls firmly within the realm and powers of the executive, we dismiss this PIL and direct the petitioner to approach the proper authority/forum for seeking the remedy claimed in the plea," the bench stated.
The PIL was filed by Jagdev Singh, who sought recognition of Hindi as the official language in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, following Articles 343 and 251 of the Indian Constitution.
Before the abolishment of Articles 370 and 35A by the Centre on August 5, 2019, and the bifurcation of J&K state, the official language of the former J&K State were Urdu, and all official records, including Revenue, Police, Acts, and Rules made by the Legislative Assembly, were either in Urdu or in English.
On Hindi Diwas this year, Home Minister Amit Shah stated that Hindi should be recognized as India's national language because it unites the entire country.
