Pune: Legendary Badminton player Nandu Natekar passed away on Tuesday at his residence at the age of 88; he is survived by his son Gaurav and two daughters.

Natekar, the first badminton player to win an International title in 1956, is also the first awardee to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award for his excellence in sports.

Expressing grief about Natekar Demise Badminton Association of India tweet, “On behalf of the Badminton Association of India, we condole the sad demise of legendary player- Shri Nandu Natekar. A man of many firsts, the Father of Indian Badminton, your journey will continue to inspire generations to come. Wishing prayers and strength to the family. #RIP”

Netekar was born in Sangli in western Maharashtra, achieved over 100 International and National titles in his career period of over 15 years.
