CAA rules notified today just before elections, is BJP’s desperate attempt at divisive politics..

Digital Desk: Amid protests and on the eve of impending elections, the BJP-led central government formally declared the enforcement of the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 on Monday. Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that these new laws aim to extend citizenship to minorities facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to Twitter to express his discontent, referencing a delegation from the ally Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) led by Sjt. Lurinjyoti Gogoi. The delegation presented a memorandum outlining concerns about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), arguing that it discriminates against the core principles of the Indian Constitution. Kharge characterised the timing of the CAA's notification just before the elections as the BJP's strategic move towards divisive politics. He stated, "CAA rules notified today just before elections, is BJP’s desperate attempt at divisive politics."

AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi conveyed his disappointment, saying, "Finally, the BJP government implemented the Citizenship Amendment Act, wiping out the sentiments of the Assamese nation and the supreme sacrifice of the martyrs." This decision has sparked intensified political discourse, with opposition leaders criticising the timing and alleging divisive motives behind the implementation of the CAA.

The political landscape is charged with differing opinions on the government's move, and the controversy surrounding the CAA has deepened as it coincides with the electoral context. The coming days are likely to witness heightened debates and discussions as various political factions respond to this significant development.
