Digital Desk: Uddhav Thackeray, the chief minister of Maharashtra, presided over a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday under threat to his government due to a party uprising, during which the request to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar was presented.

A day after Mr. Thackeray removed the portfolios of the Shiv Sena rebel ministers who are camped in Guwahati, the Cabinet met in the state secretariat in south Mumbai. The CM, who has relocated to his family's home in the Mumbai suburb of Matoshree, took part in the proceedings digitally.

There were no political conversations at the gathering, a cabinet official emphasised.

After the meeting, Anil Parab, the Shiv Sena's minister of transportation, told reporters that he wanted Aurangabad, a city in central Maharashtra, to be renamed Sambhajinagar.

According to Mr. Parab, a dependable advisor to Mr. Thackeray, the issue would be discussed at the Cabinet meeting tomorrow.

The step was made as a result of pressure being applied to the Shiv Sena, which has been accused of reneging on its core Hindutva doctrine. The opposition BJP has cornered the Shiv Sena, the head of the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration, over proposals to rename a city in central Maharashtra after the Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji.

In the Marathwada region of current-day Maharashtra, the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb founded the city of Aurangabad. In Indian history, he is regarded as a contentious figure. He also ordered the execution of Shiv Sena hero Chhatrapati Sambhaji.

Aslam Shaikh, the minister of fisheries and a member of the Congress, claimed that a thorough discussion on the escalating COVID-19 instances in some districts and the measures taken to contain them took occurred. He added that the state's deficit in rainfall was also covered.
